OUR HISTORY
The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) at Philippine Christian University traces its origins to the Nutrition program initiated in 1980, a visionary project of Mrs. Carolyn C. Beran, a missionary from Iowa, USA. Initially offered as a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics (BSHE) major in Community Nutrition under the College of Education, the program was spearheaded by Dr. David G. Tovera as College Dean and Mrs. Rosalina P. Amistoso as Department Head.
In 1981, the curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (BSND) was approved by the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports (DECS), becoming an independent program within the College of Education. Two years later, in 1983, the Department of Home Economics introduced the Certificate Program for Food Service Management (FSM), a two-year course aimed at training students for the booming food service industry, marked by the rise of fast-food chains and restaurants. Under the leadership of Mrs. Josefina R. Baclig, the department enhanced its facilities in 1986 to accommodate the growing number of FSM students.
By 1991, the Home Economics program was phased out, leading to the formation of the Department of FSM and Nutrition. This department became part of the College of Nursing and Allied Health, reflecting the university’s commitment to health-related professions. The FSM program thrived under the leadership of Ms. Antonette M. Villalon, with the establishment of the ND-FSM Cafeteria as a practical training site.
Under Dean Erlinda R. Punongbayan (1993), the focus shifted to curriculum enhancement and facilities improvement, emphasizing the production of globally competent and responsible graduates. Later, under Dean Edna O. Imperial (2000), the program evolved from FSM to Associate in Hotel and Restaurant Management (AHRM), aligning with the emerging demands of the hospitality industry. Through collaborative efforts, the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM) was introduced, with its first graduates joining the 2006 Commencement Exercises.
In 2010, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recommended the separation of BSHRM from the College of Nursing. This led to the formation of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Studies (STHS), which also introduced the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management. The university invested in modern facilities, including the Mock Hotel, Bar, Food Laboratories, and a University Canteen that housed practical learning spaces. Industry linkages and international practicum opportunities became integral to student training.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the school was renamed the College of Hospitality and Tourism (CHT) to enhance its identity. The university focused on renovating laboratories and reconnecting with industry partners for face-to-face internships. In 2024, the college was renamed the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM), signifying a strategic commitment to academic and professional excellence.
Major advancements followed, including the establishment of the CHTM Mock Bar, PCU Travel Lab with GDS (Amadeus) License, CHTM Mock Hotel, and the upcoming PCU Mock Cabin Simulator. These state-of-the-art facilities provide hands-on training aligned with global industry standards, reinforcing CHTM’s role as a leader in hospitality and tourism education.
Today, CHTM continues to evolve, integrating FAITH, CHARACTER, and SERVICE into its academic programs while striving to produce competitive graduates ready to excel both locally and internationally. The college remains steadfast in its mission to provide transformative education that meets the evolving needs of the global hospitality and tourism industry.
