COLLEGE OF ARTS and SCIENCES

"A Liberal Arts Education with a Heart"

WELCOME TO CAS!

COLLEGE OF ARTS and SCIENCES
“Building a culture of research, sustainability, and community service”

The CASSW programs, while academic in nature, are strongly anchored on the University’s pivotal Christian Virtues of Faith, Character and Service and made more meaningful as the College adopts the slogan, “A Liberal Arts Education with a Heart”. This means that CASSW specifically provides and promotes an environment that develops and challenges intellectually powered learners with a strong sense of responsibility and moral uprightness, guided by an unwavering faith in God. Responding to the fast-changing academic landscape, the College makes a meaningful commitment to continuously develop and evaluate innovative academic programs. Likewise, it also aims to take other similar initiatives to ensure that it remains to be a progressive, relevant and responsive unit of the University. Knowledge, skills, and values acquisition of the learners will be given equal premium since the prevailing norm of an efficient learner is not excellence in one or the other alone, but an intellectual gratification coupled with praiseworthy character manifested by love and service to others. The Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities Accrediting Council, Inc. (ACSCUACI) granted a Level IV Re-Accredited Status to the Arts and Sciences Programs and Level III Re-Accredited Status to the Social Work Program These accreditation results were confirmed and certified by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP). All these are the manifestations of the College’s 76 years of animating the mission and vision of the University.

Vision/Mission

“A Liberal Arts Education with a Heart”

A liberal arts education is committed to the development of the total person to enable him to realize
fullness in human life. The College of Arts, Sciences, and Social Work, through its highly competent faculty and staff, is committed to excellence in providing Christian liberal education. Education in the CASSW is geared towards the preparation of students for their various professions as responsible leaders and useful members of society, nurtured with the Christian values of faith, character, and service.

Dean

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) as it continues to celebrate its 76 years of animating the mission and vision of the university and to cascade these various programs and activities to its academic and non-academic members.

In complete alignment with the University’s thrust of creating a “distinctively strong Christian university integrating faith, character, and service in building up and enhancing the quality of life,” the college provides integral and holistic development of the individuals to be fully equipped as responsible, informed, and active participants in the local, national, and global affairs in realization of the college’s aim to provide an education that facilitates the integration and liberation of persons, enabling them to effect changes in themselves, their environment, and their society in general.

As an academic service unit for general course requirements, it offers vast opportunities where students gain knowledge, improve skills, and develop Christian values in preparation for a specialized area of learning and prospective career in English, Broadcasting, Political Science, Biology, Mathematics, Psychology, Philosophy, and Social Work.

Historical Development of the College of Arts and Sciences

Established in 1947, the College offered its Liberal Arts program together with the other courses offered by then the Manila Union College, which eventually became Philippine Christian College in 1967, and Philippine Christian University in 1976. The Liberal Arts program received its recognition from the government on July 1, 1959. The program is concerned basically with providing the proper and balanced development of the individual, physically, intellectually, morally, and spiritually. It aims to equip a student for responsible, informed participation in the local, national and world community affairs.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) became the College of Arts, Sciences and Social Work (CASSW) in 2000, when the College of Social Work was annexed to it as one of its departments. The CASSW then offered four-year Bachelor of Arts degree courses with majors in English, Communication, Sciences, Mathematics, Psychology, History, Political Science, and Social Work.

Through the years the College of Arts, Sciences and Social Work proved to be one of the pillars and premier colleges of the University. It holds the distinction of having consistently maintained the Level III accredited status granted by the ACSU-AAI since 1978. For several years it has topped among all academic units of the University in nurturing honor students. A number of these did not only pass but also landed in top ten positions in the licensure test they hurdled.

In SY 2014-2015, the University Board of Trustees issued a memorandum reverting the college into
the College of Arts and Sciences with the continuing aims at providing an educational program which helps to facilitate the integration and liberation of persons to enable them to effect changes in themselves, their environment and their society in order to realize fullness in human life for all.

In line with the thrust of the University to uphold academic excellence at all times, the College has set for itself to pursue its objectives in curriculum, instruction, faculty welfare, student welfare, and plant and facilities development.
